Kitchari - Ahimsa Food!
Eating with compassion in mind.
I like making Kitchari, a savory Indian porridge, in my slow cooker. It just makes life easier.
In a slow cooker add ingredients in the order listed and do not stir
1 cup basmati rice
1/2 cup yellow split peas or mung beans
3 T olive oil
1 T cumin
1 T fresh hot green chilies minced (or 1 t red pepper flakes, or can or green chilies) or all of it
1/3 cup raw cashew pieces
2 T fresh ginger minced
1 t turmeric powder
1 t asafoetida powder (hing)
I usually add some curry powder
Veggies: (any that you like)
Cauliflower
Potato
Carrot
Sweet potato
5-6 cups water
On top-not mixed in yet 2T veggie broth paste-“better than bullion”
A few sprigs of fresh rosemary
Let simmer 6-ish hours on low
Just before serving add:
1 1/2 t salt
1 T miyokos vegan butter
2/3 cup frozen green peas
Top plate with fresh stuff
Something green like chopped cilantro or arugula or spinach
Fresh chopped tomatoes
Maybe something hot like siriacha sauce
Welcome to the Yoga Shala!
Let’s Get You Started!
We live in interesting times these days. And with this in mind, we have been working hard to make things nice and simple for you to get started.
Go to the “Book a Class” tab and find the class you would like to attend. If you are planning on attending in the studio you will need to book that class to save your spot since there are limited spaces available.
When you book a class there is an option to purchase a punch pass, drop in, or month pass. If you don’t see the option you would like to purchase, you can head over to the “Grab a Pass” tab in the menu and see our other offerings. If you already have a pass, just skip the add ons and hit next to save your spot.
If you would rather attend class online, simply select the “Online Zoom drop-in class” to purchase the online option and we will email you the link to the class. If you already have a pass, you get daily emails with zoom links for you to choose from.
Next, head over to the “Contact” tab in the menu. Scroll down in the contact section to find the student info and waiver form. Fill this out at home instead of the studio.
When you come to your first class, plan on wearing a mask in the lobby. It is a small space and we just want everyone to feel safe. Please leave your shoes in the lobby and head into the yoga room to find your socially distanced spot on the floor. At that time you are welcome to take your mask off, or practice with it on. It’s up to you at this point.
We welcome you to our happy studio and look forward to meeting you!
A little bit about dharma Yoga
My first introduction to Dharma Yoga was eye opening. I had been practicing other forms of yoga and it was interesting to me how different this style made me feel. It was more heart opening, lots of working the spine and hips. But it wasn’t until I met Dharma Mittra and studied with him personally that I got the full taste of what Dharma Yoga is about. This yoga practice is something special, it is Hatha Raja yoga based. Hatha yoga uses yoga poses (asana) to purify and strengthen the body, and Raja yoga, or royal yoga integrates yoga of the mind, directing your focus inside for meditation. Bringing the body and mind together in your yoga practice is transformational. I loved learning from Dharma about bringing the focus inside and making each pose an offering. In a Dharma Yoga class you can expect to move through yoga poses, or asana, ending the movement portion in final savasana or relaxation, then working through some pranayama, or breath work and meditation. Dharma regularly reminds his students, “Do the work because it has to be done, and don’t be attached to the results!”
